Discover the Aesthetica Art Prize Jury 2021

Since its establishment 10 years ago, the Aesthetica Art Prize has provided a platform for artists across the globe to showcase their work through publication, exhibition, prize money and wider exposure. Previous finalists include Jenn Nkiru, Jane & Louise Wilson, Emmanuelle Moureaux and John Keane.

We are delighted to present the Jury for the 2021 award. The panel comprises influential art figures, including curators, academics and artists whose expertise spans all media.


Yinka Ilori
Artist & Designer

Yinka Ilori is a London-based multidisciplinary artist of a British-Nigerian heritage. Bringing Nigerian verbal traditional into playful conversation with contemporary design, Yinka Ilori touches on various global themes that resonate with different audiences all over the world. Humorous, provocative and fun, every project that he creates tells a story.

Bruno Bayley
Editor, Magnum Photos

Bruno Bayley is the Editor of Magnum Photos’ magazine. Prior to this he was Editor of VICE‘s print edition in the UK, and Managing Editor of its international editions. He has also worked in independent publishing. He has taken part in judging and nomination panels for MACK’s FBA, BJP, Amnesty, Magnum and Photo London awards.

Athi-Patra Ruga
Artist
 
Athi-Patra Ruga is a South African artist whose work has adopted the trope of myth as a contemporary response to the post-apartheid era, creating alternative identities to parody the status quo. Ruga’s work has been exhibited at Hayward Gallery, London; Louis Vuitton Foundation, Paris; SFMOMA, San Francisco and Tate Modern, London.
 

Eliza Williams
Editor, Creative Review
 
Eliza Williams is Editor at Creative Review magazine, writing and broadcasting on art, design, advertising and music. Eliza has published two books with Laurence King: This Is Advertising and How 30 Great Ads Were Made, and has contributed to Phaidon publications including The 21st Century Art Book and The Phaidon Archive of Graphic Design.
 

Touria El Glaoui
Founder,
1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair
 

Born and raised in Morocco, Touria El Glaoui completed her education in New York. She initiated 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in 2013 after relocating to London. She has since launched the fair in New York in 2015 and Marrakech in 2018. 1-54 is now a world-leading platform dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora.


Chris Zhongtian Yuan
Artist, Aesthetica Art Prize Winner

Chris is an artist and architect based in London. Through video, sound, architecture and performance, they investigate the entangled web of ecology, human construction, body and memory. Projects include: Wuhan Punk, Film & Video Umbrella (2020); Counterfictions, Architectural Association (2019); City of Objects, Venice Architecture Biennale (2018).
 

Imelda Barnard
Commissioning Editor, Apollo Magazine

Imelda Barnard is Commissioning Editor of Apollo magazine, where she has worked since 2013. She has written widely on modern and contemporary art, including interviews with Joan Jonas, Lubaina Himid and Frank Bowling. Previously she worked at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Irish Arts Review and the Guggenheim.
 

Rhea Storr
Artist, Aesthetica Art Prize Winner

 
Rhea Storr is an artist filmmaker who explores the representation of Black and mixed-race cultures. She is a co-director of not nowhere and programmer for Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival. Selected galleries and festivals include BFI London Film Festival, MOCA, Somerset House & Whitechapel Gallery. Rhea won the Aesthetica Art Prize 2020.

Karin Rehn-Kaufmann
Art Director, Leica Galleries
 
Karin Rehn-Kaufmann joined Leica Camera AG in 2005. Her long-standing passion for photography led to the opening of the Leica Gallery in Salzburg in 2008. Today she manages 24 galleries around the world. She has curated numerous prestigious exhibitions – including 50 Best for Leica – and judges the Leica Oskar Barnack Award.
 

Audrey Hoareau
Curator

Audrey Hoareau is a freelance curator specialised in photography. After graduating in communication, she joined the Musée Nicéphore Niépce from 2003-2016. She helped launch the Lianzhou Museum of Photography, the first public photography museum in China. She is artistic director of Festival Circulation(s) and Photo Basel 2020.
 

Rachel Louise Brown
Harper’s Bazaar, Town & Country
 
Rachel Louise Brown is a photographer, photo director and lecturer. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2011. Brown has exhibited and completed global artist residencies, most recently as part of Women in Photography Pavilion Commission at Photo London. Rachel is Photography Director of Harper’s Bazaar and Town & Country.
 

Kay Watson
Arts Technologies Curator, Serpentine Galleries

Kay Watson is a researcher, producer and curator working with art and advanced technologies, photography and video games. She is currently Arts Technologies Curator at Serpentine Galleries and a PhD researcher at Birkbeck, University of London. Recent projects include The Serpentine Podcast and Hito Steyerl, Actual Reality OS.
